Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have announced that Hell Rising, the first major expansion for Nioh 3, will launch for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on August 19, 2026.
The DLC sends protagonist Takechiyo into Edo during the Keian era of 1651. Following the death of Takechiyo’s future counterpart, the city’s period of peace has ended — and the Crucible has reclaimed its streets.
Yokai, human rebels, and foreign alchemists now occupy the ruined castle town, as another conspiracy involving the mysterious Spirit Stones threatens the shogunate. During the new story, Takechiyo will cooperate with the one-eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and Spanish envoy Rodrigo.
New Weapons and Combat Options
Hell Rising introduces a new Hoko and Shield weapon set for both Samurai and Ninja combat styles. The combination allows players to defend while attacking with a short spear, perform counters, and even throw the shield at opponents — adding a fresh tactical layer to the already deep combat system.
Higher Difficulty and Customisable Challenges
The expansion will also add new enemies, equipment, Soul Cores, and the Enlightened One’s Journey difficulty. This higher challenge level increases equipment quality and raises character, Soul Core, and Soul Matching limits after players complete Shogun’s Journey.
Another addition, Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls, allows you to customise enemy combinations and battle conditions. Completed challenges become equippable scrolls carrying special effects, with support for solo and online cooperative play.
Season Pass and Future Content
Team Ninja revealed the release date through a new first-look trailer. Hell Rising is included in the Nioh 3 Season Pass, alongside the second planned expansion, Bloody Insurrection.
Final Word
If the base game left you hungry for more yokai-slaying action, Hell Rising looks like a feast. New weapons, tougher challenges, and a return to Edo’s supernatural underworld — all arriving just in time for late summer. Mark your calendars, samurai.
