Naoki Yoshida — better known to fans as Yoshi-P — believes that remaking Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VIII, or Final Fantasy IX with the scale and structure of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project could require four or five separate games.
The Final Fantasy XIV producer and director discussed the subject alongside Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin.
“Of course I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it,” Yoshida said. “Look at Final Fantasy VI, it’s such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense.”
He added that Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX would present similar difficulties if Square Enix attempted to reimagine them with the same scope as its current Final Fantasy VII project.
“I do get that people would be asking for remakes of other titles,” Yoshida continued. “But if we did remake those other titles, we’d probably have to release them in four instalments or even five instalments.”
Don’t Get Your Hopes Up
However, Yoshida’s comments should not be interpreted as confirmation that any of these remakes are currently planned. He was simply explaining why repeating the Final Fantasy VII Remake model may not be practical for other entries in the series.
Hamaguchi has also previously stated that Square Enix has no current plans for a Final Fantasy VI remake. He believes such a project would be better handled by another creator after his team completes its existing trilogy.
What’s Next
Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third and final entry in the remake series — is scheduled to launch in spring 2027. For now, that’s where Square Enix’s focus remains.
Final Word
The dream of a Final Fantasy VI remake lives on, but Yoshida’s comments serve as a sobering reality check. Even if Square Enix wanted to revisit other classics, the sheer scope of the VII Remake project makes it a logistical and financial challenge that may not be worth repeating.
Still — five games? For FFVI? I think a lot of fans would take that deal.
